Jade
A Boubird Nanny

I am 21 years old and in my last year at Stellenbosch University studying a Bachelor of Education specialising in Foundation Stage Education. I have acquired my childcare experience au pairing for three families in the past three years 2021-2023. I have also gained educational experience on placement in nursery schools and schools. In total, I have experience with small babies and children up to the age of 11 years old.

Since graduating from high school in late 2020, I've had the privilege of working with children of various age groups. In 2021, I started the year as an online learning facilitator and au pair for a wonderful family consisting of three lovely girls (5-year-old twins and a 7-year-old). I took on the role of their "teacher" during their online school hours from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday to Friday. We enjoyed outdoor activities like trampoline and swimming during break times, and on rainy days, we engaged in puzzles and storytelling. Our Fridays were extra special with picnics in the park and fun in the jungle gym.

From February to December 2022, I became an au pair for another family with three children (a 1-year-old boy, a 10 year-old boy, and a 13-year-old girl). My days began at 6:30 am, picking them up and taking them to school, then fetching them between 1:30 pm and 2:15 pm to assist with homework. In the evenings, I would care for the 1-year-old boy as his parents work schedules overlapped. I would feed him dinner, bath him and lead his bedtime routine. Fridays often ended with ice cream and park visits to unwind after a week of school and I would take the youngest boy along in his pushchair.

During the family's school holiday (from the end of April to the beginning of March 2022), I took on a live-in teaching and au pair role for 12 days for a family with two girls (a 5-year-old and a 9-year-old) visiting from the Philippines. I ensured they continued their studies by creating lesson plans based on their school's curriculum. Our "school" day started at 6:30 a.m. and ended at 2 p.m., filled with outdoor activities, reading, trampoline jumping, card games, and swimming. Once the school day concluded, we enjoyed various activities, from baking to safaris to witness South Africa's incredible wildlife.

In 2023, I relocated to a new town in South Africa and began working as an au pair for a family with two children (a 2-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl) in March. I pick them up from their respective schools at 12 p.m. and bring them home by 1 p.m. After putting the 2-year-old down for a nap and reading him a bedtime story, the 5-year-old and I engage in arts and crafts, garden walks, or pool time. I've occasionally assisted with dinner, bathing, and bedtime routines. During school holidays, I take the children on outings to parks and towns for treats like ice cream and baby chinos. It's been a joy spending quality time with them.

I recognize the vital role of maintaining a consistent routine for children, including feeding schedules, nap times, and engaging activities, especially during their early years. I hold great respect for following the specific routines and guidelines set by parents for their children. As a patient and compassionate individual, I possess the flexibility to tailor my approach to accommodate the unique needs of each child. While I typically adhere to established routines, I acknowledge that there may be occasional days when adhering strictly can be challenging. In such instances, I rely on my creativity to adapt and still achieve positive outcomes. Furthermore, I understand the significance of building trust between myself and the child, ensuring they feel secure and at ease in my presence.

Among my interests are hiking, camping, surfing, yoga, reading, photography, arts and crafts, cooking, and baking. Of these, I particularly relish sharing my love for reading, arts, and crafts, and baking with children. Given my passion for hiking, camping, and surfing, I take great pleasure in embarking on outdoor adventures with children. I'm dedicated to encouraging them to explore new experiences and helping them discover their full potential.

I firmly support the significance of play and actively promote outdoor exploration as my preferred alternative to screen time. I take pleasure in taking children on walks, where we can appreciate the natural surroundings and engage them in conversations about what they observe, touch, and hear. During our walks, I delight in creating moments of laughter with toddlers through a playful game of 'tickle-tag.' Additionally, I find joy in activities like swimming, reading, and engaging in arts and crafts with young children.

When it comes to children aged 5 and older, I continue to emphasize the value of outdoor play, adjusting the activities to suit their age and preferences. Whether it's playing soccer, tree climbing, swimming, or skiing, I'm always eager to explore new experiences and have fun with the kids I care for. I have a genuine passion for cooking and baking, and if the children I look after share this interest, and their parents approve, I'm more than happy to engage in these culinary activities together. Additionally, I enjoy engaging in arts and crafts with children, adapting the projects to their age and abilities. As an easy-going and adventurous individual, my primary focus is to bring joy to children, and I tailor the activities I plan to their specific interests while prioritizing their well-being and parental preferences.

Cooking and baking are among my great passions, and I like to think that I excel at them. I take pleasure in experimenting in the kitchen and find that cooking comes naturally to me, which makes adjusting recipes to accommodate specific dietary needs a breeze. I also relish the creative aspect of presenting meals in a fun and appealing way, particularly to make vegetables more exciting for children. When it comes to preparing meals for children, I have a variety of ideas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including:
• Spaghetti Bolognese (vegan/vegetarian/meat)
• Cottage Pie (vegan/vegetarian/meat)
• Meat/Falafel Balls with Mashed Potatoes and Vegetables
• 'Monster' Burgers (vegan/vegetarian/meat) and Fries (sweet potato/potato)
• 'Animal Face' Peanut Butter and Banana Toast/Flapjacks
• 'Dinosaur' Omelettes
• 'Silly Faces' Breakfast Toast/Oatmeal
For snacks, I like to prepare 'Ants on a Log' (celery sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins), Date Balls, and creatively arranged 'Animal-Shaped' Fruit and Vegetable Plates. When it's time for treats, I enjoy making cupcakes, muffins, flapjacks, and cookies. During the festive season, I find joy in the collaborative baking and decorating of Christmas cupcakes, cookies, and gingerbread with children.

I look forward to meeting you all.

"Jade cared for my baby from a few months old. I am a friend of her family so I knew she was very responsible and careful. She had a strong bond with my daughter immediately. Jade is bright, bubbly, friendly, kind and respectful. She is a joy to be around. She is excellent with children of all ages. She is never strict but gets the job done." - Kelly Caden, parental employer for 2.5 years.

This letter serves to confirm that Ms Jade was my Au Pair from Feb 2022 till first week of December 2022 looking after my 3 kids aged 13, 10 and 4. Her duties included, but not limited to, fetching my children from home to school and collectiong them from school to home in the afternoon. She was also required to do homework for my 10 year old son and keep my 4 year old busy with developmental activities, as per the school's weekly programme. Jade would often go beyond and above her work duties and was always willing to go the extra mile for us as a family. Ms Jade was a pleasure to work with and we'll miss her dearly. She was reliable, friendly and a good planner. Enthusiastic at all times which demonstrated her love for her job, we all adored her! Her work was a professional and amazing ad evident by my son's school report. She is also a humble young lady with a positive attitude and loves working with scholars. I would highly recommend her as an Au Pair to any family." - Montshabi
